[ Troubleshooting ] Mac - Not Listed

The BTD-400 will not be listed as a Bluetooth device under Mac OS. The Bluetooth Preferences panel will list any Bluetooth device that has been paired the Mac’s Bluetooth adapter, but will not list the adapter itself.

Determine whether the BTD400 is being used.
  1. With the BTD-400 unplugged, click the Apple Menu and choose About This Mac.
  2. In the About This Mac window, choose System Report.
  3. In the System Report window, choose the Bluetooth section.
  4. Copy down the MAC address listed in the Bluetooth section of the System Report. The format should look like, “1A-2B-C3-D4-5E-F6.”
  5. Close the System Report and About This Mac windows, then plug the BTD-400 in.
  6. With the BTD-400 plugged in, click the Apple Menu and choose About This Mac.
  7. In the About This Mac window, choose System Report.
  8. In the System Report window, choose the Bluetooth section.
  9. Compare the MAC address from step 4 to the MAC address from step 8.

If the addresses are different, the BTD-400 was properly detected and will be used for all Bluetooth connections. You may need to delete devices that were paired when the BTD-400 was not being used and re-pair them.

If the addresses match, the BTD-400 is not being used.

If the BTD400 is not being used:

Timing Issues

Unplug the BTD, toggle Bluetooth off for six seconds, plug in the BTD, wait six seconds, then toggle Bluetooth on. MacOS can be a little fussy about Bluetooth dongles, and may just need time to sort itself out at each stage.

Force usage in MacOS terminal

Enter the following command in the MacOS terminal:

sudo nvram bluetoothHostControllerSwitchBehavior=always

To switch back to the internal adapter:

sudo nvram -d bluetoothHostControllerSwitchBehavior

If the BTD400 still isn’t being used, the adapter may not be compatible with that model. You can try contacting Apple for additional support.

The adapter will be listed as the USB device it is. On my system it shows up under a Hub under “USB Hi-Speed Bus”, as BCM20702A0, right above the BRCM2070 Hub entry that corresponds to the internal adapter.
NB: the BTD400 entry has a Serial Number property that corresponds to the BT MAC address.
